Contraception advice videos
There are many choices of contraception (ways to prevent pregnancy) based on your needs, age and medical history. It is important to consider your lifestyle habits, the cost of each contraceptive method and how often to come back for repeat prescriptions. Discuss with your GP the best method for you.
Long tern contraception (LARC)
Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is the most effective and low-cost contraception available. These include the Intrauterine Device (IUD) and the Hormonal Implant (Implanon NXT©).
Advantages of LARC:
✓ They last 3-10 years.
✓ Once inserted, you don’t need to worry about them – “Set & Forget!”
✓ They are excellent at preventing pregnancy
✓ They are not permanent – LARC can be taken out at any time so you are able to get pregnant quickly after they are removed.
✓ Costs are usually lower over time as there is no need to return for repeat prescriptions for 3-10 years.

1. Hormonal Implant
The hormonal implant (Implanon NXT©) is a tiny, thin rod about as big as a matchstick. A GP inserts the implant under the skin of your upper arm. It releases the hormone progestogen to stop you from getting pregnant.
How it works?
The hormonal implant prevents sperm movement so it cannot get to an egg. The hormonal implant also can stop the egg leaving the ovaries (ovulation).

IUD is a small contraceptive device fitted inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types:
-
- The copper IUD is a small plastic device with copper wrapped around its stem.
- The hormonal IUD is a small T-shape device with a cylinder containing progestogen around its stem (Mirena or Kyleena©).
How it works?
IUD prevent sperm movement so it cannot get to an egg. Hormonal IUDs also can stop the egg leaving the ovaries (ovulation). Information on IUD insertion:
