I am planning to fall pregnant
Fantastic! It’s best to see your GP before you start trying to conceive. Your GP can:
- Check your important vaccines are up to date
- Check you have excellent nutrition intake before and throughout pregnancy
- Ensure you are on the correct pre pregnancy supplements
- Help you be as healthy as you can be for your baby
- Discuss coming off contraception and the timing of ovulation
- Lower the risk of developing diabetes and other complications in pregnancy
I am pregnant
Congratulations! Your GP will be able to give you important health information and discuss with you what the next steps you need to take are. There are several different models of care and your GP can explain all of these to you to see which is the best fit for you.
The NHMRC recommends collaboration between GPs and maternity specialists and hospitals as it allows women to play an active part in their pregnancy. This is called Shared Care (www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/servicesandsupport/gps-shared-care-and-pregnancy).
Benefits of Shared Care to You
- See the GP that already knows you well
- Convenient appointment times
- Less waiting time in hospital outpatient clinics
- Less travelling time
- Better continuity and coordination of care
I have a newborn
This is both an exciting and stressful time for mothers, fathers and the family. Your GP is there to support and guide you through this time and help you in any way that we can. Speak to your GP about any concerns you have, whether it be about your unsettled baby, feeding challenges, sleep or just about how you are going.
